Doctoral opportunities at the MHH
Doctoral programs of the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS)
The HBRS is an interdisciplinary graduate school for physicians (MD/PhD, MBBS, Dr. med.) and natural scientists (biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, veterinary medicine, etc.).
The HBRS was founded in 2003 and serves students from more than 40 countries. In October 2006, it was honored as part of the Excellence Initiative and is still part of the DFG Clusters of Excellence"REBIRTH" (MHH),"Hearing4all" (Oldenburg/ MHH) and"RESIST" (MHH).
You can find out more about the HBRS here.
The Center for Infection Biology(ZIB) is a cross-university facility or Institutions and is supported by almost 50 working groups dedicated to infection medicine issues and located at the Hannover Medical School, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, the University of Hannover, the Twincore and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig. The PhD program "Infection Biology" is open to people who have successfully completed a university degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or natural sciences and is intended to provide project-oriented postgraduate training in research with the aim of enabling in-depth independent scientific work and an extended professional qualification for tasks in research or related activities in the field of infection biology.
The MD/PhD study programmes "Molecular Medicine" is aimed at medical physicians and natural scientists with a state examination or M. Sc. degree and prepares students for research-based science in a project-oriented manner. The English-language interdisciplinary program runs for three years. In addition to research work, the curriculum also includes key qualifications such as research and medical ethics, scientific writing and presentation. Students complete their studies with a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or Dr. rer. nat. degree. The following Facilities or Institutions are involved in the "Molecular Medicine" study programmes:
- Hannover Medical School
- Leibniz University of Hanover
- Fraunhofer Institute Hannover (ITEM)
- Helmholtz Center for Infection Research Braunschweig (HZI)
- Twincore (Hanover)
- NIFE (Hanover)
The Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH (From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy) has initiated the international PhD study program "Regenerative Sciences". This study programme is also located under the umbrella of HBRS and is intended to enable a research career in the field of regenerative medicine and benefits from the intensive cooperation within the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence. The Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH focuses on research into diseases of the organ systems blood (including immunity), heart, lungs and liver. Synergies are developed by bringing together a broad spectrum of experts with profound background knowledge.
The Center for Systems Neuroscience(ZSN), which is made up of working groups from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Hannover Medical School, the University of Hannover and the Hannover University of Music and Drama, has established the PhD program " Systems Neuroscience". The PhD program provides project-oriented postgraduate training in neuroscientific research with the aim of enabling students to carry out in-depth, independent scientific work and gain advanced professional qualifications for tasks in research or related fields of activity.

For students with outstanding performance in the first three semesters, there is also a fast-track option in the Biomedicine - Master program, which allows students to switch directly to one of the MHH's doctoral programs after the third semester, thus shortening the overall duration of their studies by half a year.
- The first three semesters of the four-semester Master's program are studied regularly.
- Students with an excellent module grade point average (threshold value is determined annually) can apply to the program coordinator of the Biomedicine - Master program to begin experimental work in one of the MHH's doctoral programs (PhD or Dr. rer. nat.) in the 4th semester after three semesters of study at the MHH (90 LP).
- Admission to this fast-track program must be approved by the program director of the Master's degree program and requires a consultation and examination interview with the program director, the respective program director of the graduate program in question and the intended supervisor of the experimental work.
- The phase of the doctoral project completed instead of the 4th semester of the Master's degree program is credited as part of the entire doctoral degree program.
- The fast-track student formally leaves the Biomedicine study program at the end of the third semester and is enrolled as a doctoral student. However, he/she retains the option of submitting a Master's thesis with clearly different content from the doctoral thesis by the end of the doctoral program at the latest, thus earning the Master of Science degree.
- The PhD programs stipulate that fast-track biomedicine students receive a letter of acceptance to the desired PhD program at the end of February of each year (i.e. at the end of the third semester) after the module grade average has been determined, the consultation and examination interview has been completed and the experimental work has been discussed with the supervisor. Likewise, the future funding of the doctoral candidate must be arranged at this time. The Dr. rer. nat. doctoral program can be scheduled more freely.
