Welcome to the MHH Facilities & Departments MHH Clinical departments Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery Events/Symposia

Dear colleagues,
We warmly welcome you to our kidney transplant conference in May 2025.

Following the presentation and discussion of our transplant figures, this kidney transplant conference will focus on the next biomarker after transplantation, the Torque Teno virus.
As you know, we would like to achieve optimal immunosuppression in our patients, as much as necessary and as little as possible. This is done in the hope of minimizing the risk of infection while protecting the transplant.

Such immunosuppression is certainly not possible through trough level control. The torque teno virus, or torque teno virus load, has emerged as an interesting new biomarker that may enable individualized immunosuppression.
We are pleased to welcome PD Dr. Veronica di Cristanziano from the University Hospital of Cologne as an expert on this topic. She is a scientist, senior physician, and head of the serological diagnostics section at the Institute of Virology there.

We look forward to an interesting exchange.
Best regards

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to our continuing education event on pancreatic cancer on April 23, 2025.

The prognosis for patients with pancreatic cancer has improved only slightly in recent years. In contrast to other gastrointestinal tumors, immunotherapy and molecular therapy have had little success so far. Surgery remains the most important and only curative therapy, as PD Dr. Linda Feldbrügge will explain in her overview lecture on modern pancreatic surgery, including an outlook on the oligometastatic situation.

The most clinically significant change in the last year concerns the new guideline on pancreatic cancer, which includes major changes, particularly in the area of preoperative diagnosis and staging. PD Dr. Thomas Wirth will present these recommendations from the guideline in his presentation and classify their significance for clinical care.

For perioperative therapy, the new guideline means an expansion of the range of indications, especially for neoadjuvant therapies, so that PD Dr. Anna Saborowski will summarize this important aspect of perioperative therapy concepts in her presentation. In addition, we will once again present interesting surgical and internal medicine cases from everyday clinical practice, which will be presented by Dr. Dennis Kleine-Döpke and Dr. Nils Jedicke. As always, we look forward to an interesting, interdisciplinary discussion with you about these cases and the presentations.

We look forward to welcoming you once again to our online training course and hope for an exciting and interactive exchange.

The flyer is available for download here.

Dear colleagues,

We warmly welcome you to our kidney transplant conference in March 2025. Following the presentation and discussion of our transplant figures, this kidney transplant conference will focus on the new biomarker of cell-free DNA (also known as donor-derived cell-free DNA).
As you know, we often face problems with our kidney transplant patients, either wondering whether a biopsy would be indicated in certain situations or, after biopsy, diagnosis, and treatment, whether our treatment has been successful. Until now, we have lacked suitable biomarkers for this purpose. Creatinine and proteinuria are only of limited help in many cases. The aforementioned cell-free DNA offers a new and exciting biomarker that promises, among other things, to be able to detect cell death in the donor organ.
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Katharina Mayer from Prof. Böhmig's working group in Vienna as an expert on this topic. She will report on the potential and limitations of this new laboratory chemical parameter.

Dear colleagues,

We would like to cordially invite you to our continuing education event “Primary Liver Tumors” on February 26, 2025.

As usual, this year's continuing education program will begin with Prof. Schmelzle's team, with Dr. van Beekum providing a comprehensive overview of surgical treatment options, from resection to transplantation. Prof. Vogel will then provide an overview of the exciting data from the past year on locoregional therapies and report on other ongoing studies. Dr. Saborowski will follow with a summary of the latest developments in the field of biliary tumors, with a special focus on the highly innovative field of molecular therapies. The event will conclude with a presentation by Dr. Wirth with practical advice on selecting the right treatment option for HCC, given the many therapeutic options available.

As usual, we will present a surgical and an internal medicine case and look forward to an interesting, interdisciplinary discussion with you.

We look forward to welcoming you to our online training event and hope for an exciting and interactive exchange.

Yours

PD Dr. med. Anna Saborowski

Continuing education event for physicians

The Rethmarer Talks mark the start of an interdisciplinary continuing education series on current topics. On Saturday, October 19, 2024, the topic of oligometastasis in gastrointestinal tumors will kick things off. A treatment decision is usually straightforward when a solitary, easily treatable metastasis is found. But what if another metastasis that is in principle easy to treat is diagnosed in another organ? The guidelines do not offer clear recommendations.

The symposium is divided into four sections:

1. General therapeutic approaches in the treatment of locally treatable metastases depending on their location (lung, liver, peritoneum, etc.)

2. Metastases of malignant tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract

3. Metastases of malignant tumors of the lower gastrointestinal tract

4. Metastases of malignant tumors of the pancreas

Based on case presentations, interdisciplinary treatment pathways will be outlined according to the current state of knowledge and discussed with the audience at the end of each section and voted on by majority decision.

We look forward to lively discussions on an exciting and topical subject and to personal exchanges with all those interested in oncology from the region!

Invitation Oncological Care Reality in Lower Saxony

Dear colleagues,

We cordially invite you to participate in our virtual training course on colorectal cancer and hope that the program will be of interest to you.

Our current program is based on the idea of examining the “distal intestinal segments” from a variety of perspectives in order to do justice to the complexity of the topic.

Dr. Roland Mertens from our Radiation Therapy department will meet PD Dr. Thomas Wirth (Gastroenterology) in a pro and con debate to discuss the importance of radiation therapy in the treatment of rectal cancer—we will see which of the two will convince you, dear participants.

As an exception, we have decided to forego our traditional program item, the lecture on the latest developments in systemic therapy. Instead, PD Dr. Anna Saborowski will discuss the fundamental decisions that need to be made when planning treatment for patients with inoperable colon cancer—a beginner's guide for those who do not prescribe systemic oncology therapies on a daily basis.

We are particularly pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. med. Carmen Dingemann, a colleague from the Endo-Colon Center Hannover, as a speaker. At the beginning of the event, she will address the “most distal tumor” in our field, which, although relatively rare, presents us with considerable challenges: anal cancer.

The evening will be rounded off by two case presentations from the gastroenterology and visceral surgery departments, where we hope to have a lively discussion with you as usual.

Yours

Prof. Dr. H. Wedemeyer

Prof. Dr. M. Schmelzle
