Information on the ward
Welcome to our website
Nursing on Ward 60 is based on the "Concept of Palliative Care on the Palliative Care Ward at the MHH", which is based on the MHH mission statement. It is planned, implemented and evaluated in a patient-oriented manner, taking into account the psychosocial situation.
Accommodation is provided in seven single rooms with access to the balcony directly in front of the room. All rooms are equipped with a television (free of charge). On request, it is possible for a relative to be accommodated in the patient's room.
Our nursing team consists of full-time and part-time registered nurses. They all have specialist training in oncology nursing or further training in palliative care. Some Nursing staff have additional qualifications such as further training as a pain nurse, complementary care, palliative respiratory therapy or practice guidance. Participation in internal and external training courses and specialist conferences is an integral part of our Human Resources and enables us to provide highly qualified Nursing for our seriously ill patients. New colleagues are introduced to their new tasks according to an induction guideline developed by our ward, which guarantees our patients a high quality of care.
Our task is to care for patients with incurable, progressive diseases with limited life expectancy who suffer from severe symptoms of these diseases. These are often tumor diseases, but patients from other specialist disciplines can also be admitted to us.
Our aim is to alleviate symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, anxiety, nutritional disorders and many others to such an extent that the patient's illness and care situation is stabilized and they can be discharged to their home environment. We also provide care and transfer to other Facilities or Institutions. The patient's family and social environment are integrated into the treatment concept.
The problems are often multidimensional, i.e. they affect physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects, which can also reinforce each other. One focus is therefore on multidisciplinary cooperation with the ward physicians, psychologists, pastoral care workers, physiotherapists and social workers. For some time now, our services have been supplemented by art therapy.
If required, we are also supported by our colleagues in wound and stoma therapy, the nutrition team and the acute pain service.
We are trained in complementary care methods and also use these to alleviate symptoms of illness, particularly to reduce anxiety and restlessness. These include embrocations with or without aromatic oils, wraps, compresses and elements from the Bobath®, basal stimulation® and kinaesthetics® concepts.
As part of regular supervision and ethical case discussions, we deal with stressful and difficult situations, reflect on ourselves and our actions and try to develop further.
In the care and nursing of patients with tumors, we are guided by our concept for oncological care at the MHH.
In most cases, patients are admitted to the palliative care ward as a transfer from another MHH ward. However, patients can also be admitted from another hospital or from home. In this case, admission to our ward 60 (whose formalities can of course be carried out by a relative) takes place via the pediatric clinic.
As the support of relatives is particularly important for seriously ill patients, we do not have visiting hours. Important features of the ward are the quiet atmosphere, the artistic design of the corridor and our living room. This offers space for visitors, conversations and meetings. A small kitchenette enables relatives to heat their own meals and store food in the fridge or freezer.
In order to meet special needs, we work together with trained volunteers who offer conversations, run small errands, accompany patients and much more.
