Science module in the HannibaL model degree program

The longitudinal science module is designed to provide medical students with the necessary skills to reflect on scientific findings and developments in medicine, to critically evaluate them and to integrate them into medical practice. The module is interdisciplinary in nature and comprises various components: In addition to the completion of various portfolio learning tasks as part of an assessment portfolio, which serve to critically reflect on research methods and scientific practice, seminars are offered from the 3rd year of study onwards to deepen methodological skills. In years 3-5, students must also complete a research paper, which must be submitted and assessed by the beginning of the 5th year of study at the latest. Proof of attendance at the "Good Scientific Practice" course is also compulsory, as is participation in the annual progress test with questions on scientific topics.

Learning objectives

Students should acquire the following skills as part of the science module:
1. the ability to conduct independent literature research; writing and presentation techniques; basic methods of scientific work and the development of a sound scientific understanding in accordance with the rules of good scientific practice, which is the prerequisite for evidence-based action and lifelong learning.
2. the ability to classify the individual case of illness in the existing system of medical science and to derive medical action from this.

The science module has been part of the compulsory curriculum for all first-year students since the winter semester 2020/2021.
