What is the exact procedure if your child has an operation with us?

Many parents find the moment when their child is broughtintothe operating theater particularly stressful. In order to take the fear out of this moment and make it as gentle as possible, we provide very early and detailed information about what will happen before, during and after the operation. As we want you to know what goes on behind the doors of the operating theater, we have created information for parents on our website about the individual clinical pictures we treat.

Preparation for the operation begins on the ward with a sedative(premedication), which is administered as a juice about 1 hour beforehand. This ensures that the young patients are as relaxed and tired as possible on the way to the operating theatre. Your child will then be met by the anesthetist or anesthesia team at the so-called "gate" to the operating theatre. At this point, your child is usually already in a kind of half-sleep.

In the operating room itself, the "induction" is carried out with a mask anesthetic so that your child will no longer feel the first measures (insertion of accesses ("drip") and attachment of monitoring instruments).

After the operation, the anesthesia is terminated in the operating theatre (if no post-operative ventilation is required) and your child is taken to the recovery room. Here you can sit at the bedside again. Parents and child will then remain under professional observation until the after-effects of the anesthesia have completely subsided. You will then return to the normal ward.
