Impressions from the OR

Our children's OR is characterized by the fact that the operating theatres are located in the children's hospital building. This means that patients have to travel very short distances from the ward to the operating theater. As surgeons from other specialist disciplines can also be called in for operations in individual cases, the entire expertise of the MHH's medical and nursing staff is available on site here at the Children's Hospital.

Two large, modern operating theaters, both fully equipped (including instruments and equipment for minimally invasive surgery, heart-lung machine, X-ray), form the core of our operating area. Complex operations can therefore be carried out simultaneously in both theaters.

The OR is staffed by a permanent team of OR nurses and caregivers who are highly trained in the special requirements of pediatric surgery. The same applies to the core medical and nursing team in anaesthesia (anaesthetic medicine), who are also highly qualified in their field. With this well-coordinated team, we can guarantee that we are ready for our patients 24 hours a day with well-trained and highly qualified staff.

The procedures in our operating theaters, which are specially equipped for pediatric surgery, are coordinated by us pediatric surgeons. The spectrum ranges from short outpatient procedures to complex heart operations, where even the use of the heart-lung machine takes up a lot of time. In between lies a variety of operations with very different challenges. Even the age and size of the patients vary considerably, as the smallest premature babies are born before the 30th week of pregnancy and sometimes weigh less than 500 grams. At the other end of the scale, some 16-year-olds are already over 1.80 meters tall and correspondingly heavy.

The special thing about surgical pediatric medicine is that it takes place across all organs and the range of different interventions is therefore very broad. Some areas are primarily the responsibility of organ specialists (e.g. heart surgery, transplant surgery, neurosurgery), with whom we occasionally work together in the operating theater for complex procedures. The excellent cooperation between all surgical disciplines at the MHH sometimes "blurs" the boundaries of organ specialization, from which our patients benefit greatly.
