The aim of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is to stimulate the affected tissue using focused shocks. This stimulates both blood circulation and cell metabolism, which is intended to alleviate the symptoms. The evidence for this form of therapy has not yet been confirmed, which means that statutory health insurance does not cover the costs. This therapy is an IGeL service according to GOÄ A302. The costs amount to €34.97 per treatment.
Typical indications for radial shock wave therapy are, for example
- Tennis and golfer's elbow (epicondylopathy radialis/ulnaris)
- Chronic shoulder tendon complaints with and without calcifications (impingement syndrome / tendinosis calcarea)
- Heel spur (plantar fasciitis)
- Patellar tendinitis
- Tibial crest syndrome
- Chronic Achilles tendon complaints (achillodynia)
- Painful inflammation of the tendons on the hip crest (trochanteric bursitis)
- Chronic pain in the back, shoulder and neck area (myofascial pain syndrome)
