Information on the Dr. rer. nat. degree:

On April 15, 2009, as amended on November 14, 2012, April 23, 2014, January 11, 2017, October 17, 2018 and October 7, 2020, the MHH Senate adopted the doctoral regulations for the award of the degree of Doctor of Natural Sciences (Doctor rerum naturalium). These regulations apply to all MHH doctoral students in the natural sciences who are not enrolled in the structured programs of the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) and are seeking the Dr. rer. nat. degree.
Here are some essential contents. Details can be found in the doctoral degree regulations below.

  • The requirements for admission are regulated in §3 of the regulations.
  • Enrollment: doctoral students must be enrolled at the MHH for the entire duration of their doctoral studies (§1(3)).
  • Notification: The doctoral project must be registered in the form of a dissertation notification before it begins. Details are regulated in §4 and Annex 1 of the regulations.
  • Supervision: The supervisor must be a member of the MHH teaching staff and have a proven track record as a scientific researcher through publications. A second supervisor must also be named, who must be a member of the teaching staff but from another Department of the MHH or the Faculty of Natural Sciences or the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Leibniz Universität Hannover or a habilitated natural scientist at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation (see §5(1)). One of the two supervisors should be a natural scientist. This and the supervisor's departmental affiliation should be clearly stated in the dissertation notification.
  • Curricular achievements are required. These are regulated in §6 of the regulations. They are documented in a study book.

  • Doctoral degree regulations for the Dr. rer. nat. new!!!, valid from 7.12.2022!!! Doctoral students who have submitted their dissertation notification earlier continue to study according to the old regulations (PDF, 1350 KB), but can also be examined according to the new regulations.
