I Can Change'
Prevention and treatment of dysregulated sexuality
"Sexual assaults rarely happen like a bolt from the blue, they have a prelude in the soul and sexuality." (Prof. Dr. Dr. Uwe Hartmann)
In order to prevent sexual assault, it is therefore important to make offers before it happens. With this aim in mind, the 'I Can Change' prevention project was launched in 2017 in the MHH's Clinical Psychology and Sexual Medicine department. The aim is to help people who suffer from sexual impulses and seek help because they fear they will no longer be able to control them. In addition to the excessive consumption of pornography, this also includes sexual fantasies of violence and sexual assault. Under the motto 'crime prevention is the best victim protection', the project offers anonymous and free therapeutic help under confidentiality and aims to prevent sexual assaults in the future and in the long term, because prevention means preventing crimes before they happen.
The treatment of excessive sexual behaviour and sexualized violent fantasies and impulses requires an awareness of the problem and the willingness to seek therapeutic help. Persons who are currently under investigation for sexual offences, who have not fully served their sentence and/or whose sentence includes conditions or probation are not included in the therapy programme. Also not included are persons whose sexual fantasies and offenses are directed exclusively at children and adolescents. We ask these persons to contact the Dunkelfeld prevention project.
