nutritionDay worldwide 13.11.2025

A global initiative to combat malnutrition in healthcare facilities

On November 13, 2025, nutritonDay worldwide will once again take place at Hannover Medical School (MHH)!

Up to around 40 percent of hospitalized patients are affected by disease-related malnutrition. This leads to increased costs for the healthcare system, longer lengths of stay and unfavorable long-term prognoses. The aim of nutritionDay is to increase knowledge and awareness of malnutrition in healthcare facilities and improve the quality of nutritional care.

NutritionDay is a one-day cross-sectional survey designed to raise awareness of malnutrition. On a fixed day each year, voluntarily participating hospitals and care facilities around the world have the opportunity to take part in this survey.

The MHH has repeatedly participated in this survey. The annual check offers the unique opportunity to monitor and measure nutritional care in order to identify potential for improvement and thus ensure the best possible care for patients. Repeating the survey in subsequent years enables continuous monitoring, which can be used for quality assurance purposes.

The project was first carried out in January 2006 under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Hiesmayr (Medical University of Vienna) with the support of the Medical University of Vienna, the Austrian Society for Clinical Nutrition (AKE) and ESPEN (European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism).

The survey will take place again at the MHH on November 13, 2025. It will be carried out with the support of the School for Dieticians, the Department of Nutritional Medicine, clinical dieticians and the Sustainable Nutrition Advisor.

The nutritionDay offers the following analytical focal points:

  • Nutrition-relevant structures and processes of hospital wards
  • Patient profile of the hospital
  • Recording weight development and current food and drink intake during the hospital stay and nutritional therapy measures
  • Patient risks for malnutrition, proportion of patients in individual risk categories
