The intensive care physician
Dr. Michael Sasse
Liver, kidney, heart and lung - 50 to 70 organs are transplanted at the Children's Hospital every year. This makes the Clinical Department a leader in Germany, also in terms of the children's likelihood of survival and quality of life. Every transplanted child is cared for in the pediatric intensive care unit. Dr. Michael Sasse is the senior physician on this ward: "We can be proud of our achievements." But behind every transplant is an organ donation. The organs often come from children who have died in an accident. "The decision to have organs removed is incredibly difficult for parents who have just lost their child." This is because the idea of their child's integrity continues until death. "If parents nevertheless agree to organ removal, they deserve the greatest respect." For the physician, such conversations with grieving parents are among the most difficult moments in his profession. "Such situations are very emotionally stressful for the team."
