The Reconstructive Limb Surgery team at the Department of Trauma Surgery at Hannover Medical School offers a wide range of services for the treatment of both acquired, complex secondary conditions following accidents to the extremities and congenital deformities.
We focus on the treatment of bone fractures that do not heal or heal in a malposition (so-called pseudarthroses) as well as extensive bone and soft tissue infections. We employ highly innovative treatments and surgical procedures (open and minimally invasive), using individually 3D printed patient-specific implants and templates, computer simulations and experimental tissue replacement procedures (e.g. cage systems).
To correct axial misalignments, for example, we use adjustable external tensioners (so-called hexapod fixators) in all three spatial planes, which enable precise computer-aided correction of multidimensional deformities. This allows the leg axis to be corrected to the exact degree.
The latest generation of fully intramedullary telescopic intramedullary nails and external procedures are also used to treat leg length discrepancies.
The latest treatment concepts are also available for the treatment of non-healing fractures. These include therapy with stem cells and special growth factors that specifically stimulate bone fracture healing.
Thanks to our very close cooperation with the Clinical Department of Plastic, Aesthetic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery (headed by Prof. Dr. Vogt) at Hannover Medical School, the treatment of extensive skin and soft tissue defects and the treatment of "threatened extremities" is also possible at the highest level. The newly implemented Extremities Board at the MHH provides a framework for discussing highly complex injury situations on a multi-professional basis, always with the aim of preserving the extremity.
The Extremities Board meeting takes place every Wednesday at 4:30 pm and is open to all colleagues for the presentation of external patients, both with the wish for further treatment and to obtain a second opinion.
