The pediatrician
Dr. Kanzelmeyer
Dr. Nele Kanzelmeyer (42) was already particularly interested in the kidneys during her studies. Today, she is a senior physician at the Clinical Department of Paediatric Kidney, Liver and Metabolic Diseases and co-director of the KfH Children's Kidney Center in Hanover. She has been dealing with transplanted children and adolescents for many years - in outpatient clinics and on wards. "Pre-emptive organ transplantation is the best solution for children whose kidneys no longer function, because spending too long on dialysis increases the risk of serious cardiovascular disease," explains the nephrologist. Unfortunately, however, the average waiting time for a new kidney in children is currently two to three years. When it finally works out and the organ is accepted by the body, it is always a great moment for the physician to observe that the children suddenly make great physical and mental progress and catch up on many things. "Parents often get to know completely new aspects of their children." Dr. Kanzelmeyer often accompanies these patients from infancy to adolescence.
