The greatest gift in the world
Alina, a lung transplant since 2017 at the age of 20
For others, this photo has hardly any meaning. For me, it means everything. For others, it is normal to be healthy. That your organs work as they should. For me, it's not.
My name is Alina and I had a lung transplant at the age of 20.
I was diagnosed with (idiopathic) pulmonary arterial hypertension at the age of 15; later I also found out about Osler's disease, a genetic defect. I was relatively well at the time of the diagnosis.
My new life began that day
Over the years, there were ups and downs until my condition deteriorated to such an extent that I was put on the waiting list for a lung transplant. Exactly 3 months later, in July 2017, I received what was probably the best phone call of my entire life - the physicians at the MHH had a lung for me. My new life began that day.
Doubts and fears are completely normal
I admit that I wasn't always so hopeful and determined about the situation. After all, such an operation is a major procedure and you have absolutely no idea what to expect. Doubts and fears are completely normal here. Nevertheless, I decided to go ahead. And after just a short time with my new lungs and as things stand today, I can say with a clear conscience and complete pride that I have received the greatest gift in the world. Of course, I was also a little lucky that all the parameters of the donor lung suited my body so well. But the fact that I can be here today with this smile also means a lot of work and perseverance every day, above all the will to be able and allowed to live. Because receiving an organ from someone else is absolutely not the norm.
I can enjoy my life (breathing) to the fullest
Today I feel better than ever before in my life. I can live carefree, do sports again, travel and enjoy my life to the fullest.
I now celebrate my birthday twice a year - with my family, my boyfriend and my friends.
And every day I get up & am grateful to all the people who have made my second life possible.
