Cancer registry
Comprehensive cancer registration is regulated by law in Germany. A distinction must be made between epidemiological and clinical cancer registries.
Epidemiological cancer registries collect and analyze population-based data on the incidence and frequency of cancers and their distribution by age, gender and place of residence of the patients.
Clinical cancer registries collect and analyze data on the course of a patient's disease, from diagnosis and individual treatment stages to relapses, survival and death. They are primarily used for quality assurance purposes, e.g. by investigating compliance with medical guidelines.
Epidemiological and clinical cancer registries are established at the level of the federal states, but work together across state borders. In Lower Saxony, these are the
- Epidemiologic Cancer Registry of Lower Saxony(EKN) and the
- Clinical Cancer Registry of Lower Saxony(KKN).
The tumor documentation of the CCC Hannover (Claudia von Schilling Center) works closely with these cancer registries and reports the data of patients treated at the MHH to the extent required by law and in compliance with data protection regulations.
