Glycobiology (BCM WP 28)
Qualification objective
To provide a deeper and broader understanding of the chemistry and biology of carbohydrates and their applications.
Competencies
After successfully completing the module, students will be able to
- recognize relationships between the structure, conformation, stereochemistry and properties of carbohydrates.
- explain important methods for synthesizing certain glycosides and oligosaccharides.
- recognize other compounds such as glycoproteins and glycolipids and describe their occurrence, structures and biosyntheses.
- assess the areas of application of these compounds based on their structure and mode of action.
- explain the close relationship between molecular structure and biological functions based on the properties of carbohydrates.
- understand the importance of carbohydrates for biological systems and their possible medical applications.
- use important terms to present facts of carbohydrate chemistry professionally in writing and verbally.
