Single center: Tuberous sclerosis
The Center for Tuberous Sclerosis (TS), together with the Hanover Social Pediatric Center, offers a network for patients with various complications of TS.
Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is a genetic multisystem disease with tumor formation in various tissues. Approximately 1 in 6000 - 8000 newborns are affected by this disease. While developmental disorders and epilepsy are in the foreground in childhood, complications of various organs, especially the skin, kidneys and lungs, occur in the course of life.
In order to ensure optimal clinical care for patients and joint scientific activities, it is necessary to establish a supra-regional network of practitioners and scientists involved in the disease.
Competencies of the individual center:
- Outpatient and inpatient treatment of children and adolescents with developmental disorders, epilepsy or other neurological abnormalities in the context of tuberous sclerosis
- Coordination of further measures such as kidney, heart, skin and eye examinations for children and adolescents with tuberous sclerosis
- Arranging contacts for adults with tuberous sclerosis with specialists experienced in this field from other Clinical Departments at Hannover Medical School and, if necessary, external specialists
- Addressing the topic of tuberous sclerosis in student teaching as well as in teaching for nursing staff and speech therapists
- Study on the use of mTOR antagonists in TS patients with refractory epilepsy (together with the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein)
