Research/ Clinical study

The article "GAVCA Study: Randomized, Multicenter Trial to Evaluate the Quality of Ventricular Catheter Placement with a Mobile Health Assisted Guidance Technique", which was written with the active participation of PD Dr. med. E. Hermann and M. Polemikos, both employees of the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, received special mention in the August issue of the journal Neurosurgery, the leading international journal for neurosurgery. The article, published as an August Spotlight Article, describes a multicenter study with a "navigation system" for the safe/improved placement of ventricular catheters.

New book on dystonia: Treatment of Dystonia

Dystonia is a complex movement disorder. The book "Treatment of Dystonia" (publisher: Dressler, Altenmüller and Krauss) provides a comprehensive overview of all manifestations and treatment options for this clinical picture.

The treatment concepts for the many different manifestations of dystonia vary considerably, e.g. botulinum toxin therapy, deep brain stimulation, oral drug treatment, rehabilitation and behavioral therapy. Optimal treatment results can be achieved by using different treatment modalities.

The book brings together a unique international panel of dystonia experts who share their clinical and scientific experience. This allows the best available therapies to be selected and combined.

The book is aimed not only at physicians, scientists and therapists but also at those affected by dystonia.

Dirk Dressler, Eckart Altenmüller, Joachim K. Krauss: Treatment of Dystonia, 2018, ISBN 978-1-107-13286-3 (hardcover), ISBN 978-1-316-99841-0 (ebook), Cambridge University Press

Award

Dr. med. Gökce Hatipoglu Majernik, Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, was awarded a poster prize for her dissertation "Effects of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in primary and secondary intracranial tumors - an in vitro study" by the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. The prize is endowed with 250 €.

Third-party funding

The German Research Foundation grants Prof. Dr. med. Joachim K. Krauss, Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, funding in the amount of € 203,000 for research work on the topic of "Impedance optimization by electrophoretic deposition of laser-generated colloidal nanoparticles on the surface of platinum-iridium macroelectrodes for deep brain stimulation and platinum-tungsten microelectrodes for the recording of neuronal activity". The thematic focus is on the optimization of electrodes that can be implanted in humans by adjusting the impedance (complex electrical resistance). One of the aims of the project is to save energy and thus reduce the undesirable side effects of stimulation.

Appointment as President of the German Academy of Neurosurgery

Prof. Dr. med. Joachim K. Krauss, Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, was elected President of the German Academy of Neurosurgery (DANC/GANS) in January 2018. The office was conferred on him at the 2018 DANC Convention in Bern, Switzerland, at the beginning of July.

The German Academy of Neurosurgery (DANC) promotes the academic development of neurosurgery in Germany. Its activities focus on teaching and research at universities, colleges and teaching hospitals, supporting basic research, clinical and technical development in the field of neuroscience and promoting young academics. A further aim of the association is the interdisciplinary and international exchange of experience.

Funding

The Clinical Department of Neurosurgery was successful in the competition for funding for quality and risk management projects. The funding awarded is an expression of the appreciation of the Presidium of the MHH for special achievements of the respective Department. The Clinical Department of Neurosurgery was able to impress with a concept for optimized, interdisciplinary Communications on the topic of "Doctor-Nurse Conversation". In addition, the "implementation of a nursing expert" on neurosurgical ward 26 is supported with funding.
