How do I deal with parents and relatives in difficult situations? How do I protect myself from excessive psychological stress?
In our day-to-day work, we are repeatedly confronted with situations in which we have to deal with acute crisis situations such as sudden death or an acute serious or chronic illness of our patients.
This leads to extraordinary psychological stress for both the parents of the children concerned and the staff treating them. The work of the pediatric intensive care network in particular shows the great need for support in these situations. However, due to the lack of trauma psychologists or other counseling facilities or Institutions, this need cannot be met.
In order to provide professional psychological and social support to parents and families of seriously ill, injured and deceased children, as well as to the teams treating them in this difficult situation and beyond the period of hospitalization, we have joined forces with the Institute for Human Resources in Freiburg and the "Kleine Herzen Hannover" association to set up a crisis intervention network. The aim is to establish a supra-regional network in the PIN pediatric network, based on physicians and nurses who have been professionally trained as crisis counselors.
The courses to date have been extremely well received. The project of the "Kleine Herzen Hannover" association has now been awarded several prizes.
The course fees for the team from the PIN are paid by the "Kleine Herzen Hannover" association. The number of participants is limited to 15 per course. Highly qualified training is provided by the Institute for Human Resources (IHR, Freiburg), which works closely with the DRK. The course content will include psychological stress and strain factors of affected parents, grief and stress reactions and disorders, health-promoting coping strategies, salutogenesis and resilience, conversation techniques, self-protection and mental hygiene.
