Pedelec and bicycle accident survey
Prospective study on accidents and near-accidents involving pedelecs and bicycles (pedelec and bicycle accident survey)
Prospective, actively supported recording and evaluation of pedelec and bicycle accidents (including single-vehicle accidents and near misses). The aim of the study is to examine 3,000 participants from the "Pedelecs and Health" study (spread across Germany) in detail over two years with regard to accidents (including single accidents) and near misses. The aim is to counteract the "non-reporting" of single-vehicle accidents and near misses in order to proactively reduce the number of unreported cases. Both types of accident are rarely reported to the police. The data is intended to provide information on the type of accident as well as the course of the accident and opponents, causes of accidents and injuries. In addition, the subjective perception of safety of various target groups (pedelec and cyclists, age, gender, level of experience, novice riders, etc.) in road traffic is also surveyed in order to create targeted measures to improve the cycling infrastructure. Data on the accident history of the participants is also available due to the currently planned follow-up of the test subject collective. The analysis of the test subject collective enables a long-term view of cyclists who have already been involved in accidents (accident reports since 02/2017).
Across Germany, 3000 subjects aged 18 and over who own a pedelec and/or bicycle are to be included.
The recruitment phase for this study has ended.
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) with funds from the National Cycling Plan 2020.
