The Department of Radiation Protection and Medical Physics (SSMP) is MHH's central institution for radiation protection and provides medical physics services for the Clinical Departments and Institutes of MHH with X-ray applications and applications of radioactive substances. The SSMP provides both routine and scientific support. In addition, the SSMP is designated as an incorporation measuring point in accordance with § 169 StrlSchG and, together with the Clinical Department of Nuclear Medicine, performs the tasks of the Regional Radiation Protection Center of the employers' liability insurance associations ETEM and RCI.

Research projects
Use of disposable duodenoscopes for ERCP
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERPC) is a procedure in gastroenterology in which X-rays are used as part of an intervention on the human digestive system. Mobile or stationary C-arm X-ray systems are used for this purpose. Both disposable and hygienically reprocessable duodenoscopes are available for performing ERCP. Disposable duodenoscopes include those whose end appears transparent in the X-ray image, which can be advantageous as important structures of the bile ducts are less obscured.
In collaboration with the Clinical Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases and Endocrinology, the extent to which their use could also have a beneficial effect on the image quality and radiation exposure of patients is being investigated, and whether it would make sense to adapt the protocols for controlling the X-ray tube.
Collaborative project: QUADRANT - Quantitative evaluation of tissue samples using three-dimensional X-ray analysis technology

Diseases manifest themselves both in the visible body and at the microscopic level in tissue. However, conventional histological methods only use two-dimensional tissue sections. The interdisciplinary QUADRANT project, a collaboration between Histomography GmbH, Hannover Medical School and the University of Göttingen, aims to develop non-destructive quantitative 3D analyses of larger tissue samples for (bio)medical research and diagnostics. To this end, questions from the fields of developmental biology, regenerative medicine, anatomy and pathology are answered using a 3D X-ray microscope specially developed for kerosene tissue blocks as well as morphometric quantification of tissue architecture using 3D image processing and artificial intelligence methods.
Knowledge transfer outside the MHH
Since 2013, the SSMP has been involved in events at general education schools with the motto "Radiation for Life". For example, employees regularly give talks at the Schiller School and take part in the "Market of Opportunities" together with the MTR School. Events have also been held at other schools.

At the end of February 2025, the Davenstedt volunteer fire department and the Linden volunteer fire department carried out a training exercise at the SSMP. These fire departments are responsible for decontaminating people, among other things, in the city of Hanover's concept.
As part of the exercise, over 30 firefighters were able to carry out measurements in real radiation fields and with open radioactive substances and thus train in the use of measuring equipment. The activities of the SSMP (disposal, incorporation measuring point, regional radiation protection center) were also presented.

The incorporation measuring body is accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. The accreditation is only valid for the scope of accreditation listed in the annex to the certificate (D-PL-13168-03-00).

The services of the Incorporation Measurement Center are subject to a fee.
The costs are
- for a standard measurement on the whole body counter: 95.00 euros
- for a standard measurement on the partial body counter: 85.00 euros
- for a standard direct measurement of urine: 125.00 euros
All prices are net plus VAT.
In the case of detection of incorporations that require a more complex dose determination, higher costs may be incurred depending on the effort involved.
Regional Radiation Protection Center (RSZ)
For occupational incidents with possible radiation exposure
The Regional Radiation Protection Centers are control centers that advise those affected by occupational incidents involving increased radiation exposure and initiate the necessary measures.
The Department of Radiation Protection and Medical Physics operates the Regional Radiation Protection Center Hannover together with the Clinical Department of Nuclear Medicine at the MHH as part of the Institute for Radiation Protection operated by the employers' liability insurance associations ETEM and RCI.
