ASCEND in the final selection for the Lower Saxony Innovation Award
The ASCEND project from the Innovative Amputation Medicine working group has made it to the final selection for the Lower Saxony Innovation Award 2025 in the knowledge and technology transfer category.
In close alliance with the prosthetics company Ottobock, a center of excellence for translational care for amputations and complex limb injuries is being created. Surgical innovations, neurotechnology, prosthetics and digital rehabilitation will be brought together. At the heart of the center are high-precision human-machine interfaces, where muscle and nerve signals are coupled directly with smart prostheses. Motor control and sensitivity can be restored where conventional methods reach their limits. The care of patients is also improved by AI-supported, personalized rehabilitation measures, among other things.
The award ceremony will take place on November 4, 2025.

1 Interdisciplinary Emergency Room Training (IERT)
Shock room training
At the end of August, the Interdisciplinary Emergency Room Training course took place for the first time in the Central Emergency Room. In cooperation with the specialist departments involved in emergency room care, trauma and conservative emergency room management is trained and interdisciplinary exchange is promoted.
In addition to the Clinical Department of Trauma Surgery, the ZNA nursing teams and the Clinical Departments of Internal Medicine, Neurology and Anesthesia are also involved.
In the trauma room, the emergency department teams face special challenges, and not just in medical terms. This is because people from different professions and specialist areas work closely together there. The shock room training is intended to promote cooperation between the "colorful" teams. The individual members should get to know each other as equals and improve Communications. The curriculum has been adapted to the special MHH conditions in an interdisciplinary manner based on courses at Hamburg University Hospital.
From 2024, the IERT course will take place once a month - the participating specialist departments have corresponding course places available. Further information is available at iert@mh-hannover.de.
Topic booklet "Spinal trauma"
October 2023
Injuries to the spinal cord and nerve roots continue to pose a major challenge in our field. We are usually able to treat both bony and ligamentous consequences of accidents to the spinal column very well, both conservatively and surgically. Approximately 20 % of patients with spinal injuries have neurological deficits associated with the accident. These often lead to serious physical, psychological and social consequences.
The current special issue "Spinal Trauma " of the journal "Die Unfallchirurgie" (introduction by Prof. S. Sehmisch) deals with this topic in detail.
Innovative amputation medicine in the media
September 2023
Two dramatic cases that were treated in an interdisciplinary manner by our Innovative Amputation Medicine team were recently highlighted in the media:
Quadruple amputee after blood poisoning
Georg Winterling - a 40-year-old family man, passionate skier, mountain biker and hunter - is torn from life after a small cut on his index finger. A small wound develops into a life-threatening blood poisoning, known as sepsis. A dramatic fight for his life ensues, and the MHH physicians from trauma surgery and plastic surgery manage to save at least parts of his arms and legs. Hybrid seminar "Partners in modern sarcoma therapy"
July 4, 2023
Soft tissue sarcomas are rare tumors that can occur at almost any location in the body. Multimodal therapy is complex and surgical treatment is often challenging.
We support our patients during preoperative therapy, the postoperative course and in rehabilitation together with specialists in physiotherapy, oncology nursing, nutritional therapy and technical orthopaedics. In addition to the oncological aspects of the disease, our activities focus in particular on functional limitations, the return to normal life and coping with short-, medium- and long-term therapy and tumor consequences.
We would like to invite you to a joint discussion on July 4, 2023 as part of the hybrid event "Resection and Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Sport: Partners in Modern Sarcoma Therapy" (flyer)
ZOOM-link to the event
Dr. med. Jennifer Ernst, head of the MOBILISE-N working group at the MHH's Trauma Surgery Clinical Department, will be one of the speakers.
We look forward to your participation in this hybrid event!
Certification network laboratory
Experimental Trauma Surgery was once again recognized as a Network Laboratory Musculoskeletal Regeneration in accordance with the guidelines of the Basic Research Section of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU).
Research into musculoskeletal regeneration requires a multidisciplinary approach, which is implemented in the research laboratories of the Clinical Departments of Trauma Surgery and Orthopaedics. This field of research is concerned with the regeneration of affected musculoskeletal tissue outside or inside the human body.
By networking the researchers, the MR-Net aims to structure and bundle experimental and clinical research into musculoskeletal diseases in order to implement the latest results in clinical care and thus support the quality of life and mobility of patients.

Topic booklet "Critical-size bone defects"
The Clinical Department of Trauma Surgery at MHH specializes in the treatment of complex injuries and the reconstruction of large bone defects.
In the current issue of "Die Unfallchirurgie" you will find interesting papers on this topic involving our Clinical Department.
450,404 € funding for research into callus distraction
The German Research Foundation (DFG ) is funding the project "Influence of distraction speed on regenerate formation during femoral callus distraction in the rat model" (applicants: Prof. Dr. Emmanouil Liodakis, Prof. Dr. Claudia Neunaber/ExperimentalTrauma Surgery) for a period of 36 months with 450,404 euros.
Callus distraction is an established method for the treatment of large bone defects. Despite advances in implant development, the duration of treatment can be months to years, as a suitable distraction rate of approx. 1 mm per day has been assumed to date. The aim of this animal experiment is to question the optimal distraction speed and to analyze the influence of the distraction speed on a molecular biological level.
UCH successfully acquires third-party funding from the EKFS for polytrauma research
January 2023
Dr. med. vet. Katrin Bundkirchen, Deputy Head of Research and Laboratory of Experimental Trauma Surgery, was successful in obtaining third-party funding from the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation in the amount of € 257,273 over a period of 36 months.
The project "Analysis of the effect of polytrauma on murine fracture healing in the long-term" is investigating why bone fracture healing is often impaired after the most severe injuries.
A polytrauma is defined here as several injuries which, taken together, represent a life-threatening situation for the patient. As a result, polytrauma is the leading cause of death in patients under the age of 50, and 60% of survivors still suffer from relevant disabilities years later - such as delayed or absent healing of bone fractures. The reasons for this have not yet been sufficiently researched. All that is known is that there is a direct link between polytrauma and bone healing, as the same molecules are released in the inflammatory reaction after polytrauma as after bone fractures. However, there is a lack of studies that examine the healing of bone fractures after polytrauma in a standardized way over time. Therefore, the aim of this project is to investigate the regeneration of bone fractures over a period of 21 days after polytrauma in a mouse model that is comparable to clinical reality.
Fractures around the shoulder joint
SAVE THE DATE: January 20 - 21, 2023
The AO Trauma Xtra4 Lower Saxony seminar will take place again in 2023 as a face-to-face event with appropriate hygiene measures.
We warmly welcome Prof. Dr. Dr. Sehmisch to the circle of scientific directors.
Fractures and injuries around the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle are more topical than ever. This is due on the one hand to the increasing number of fractures in old age and on the other hand to the high level of leisure and sporting activity. Surgical treatment has become better and more logical. The focus is on proximal humerus fractures, but all injuries to the shoulder girdle can present a challenge.
Answers will be given to all important questions on: age-dependent treatment, implants, access routes, clinical results and innovations, and much more!
Further information and the program can be found here.

FORUM Geriatric Traumatology
Interest group for improving the care of geriatric patients in the Hanover region
-
6th meeting: 24.08.2022, MHH lecture hall M, J01, 17-18:30
We have long understood that dealing with geriatric traumatology can be meaningful and promising in the long term if the original idea of interprofessionalism and interdisciplinarity is put into practice.
Irrespective of their respective sponsorship, we believe that the hospitals in the Hannover Region share responsibility for the care of geriatric traumatology patients. After initially focusing on improving Communications, an illustrious community of interests has now emerged.
Thanks to the regular opportunity to exchange ideas on specific topics, all those involved are aware of the difficulties of other Clinical Departments, which are often similar to their own problems and can have the effect of "shared suffering". On the other hand, the description of one's own solutions often leads to "aha" effects that everyone can use for their own Clinical Department.
Last but not least, the "Forum for Geriatric Traumatology" can grow into an institution with increasing participation of all affected Clinical Departments, which, with its combined strength, may be able to bring about meaningful changes in the future, e.g. in dealing with cost bearers.
Interested parties are welcome to attend the meetings at any time.

Landed in Christoph 4 for the last time after 37 years
Volker Hubrich from Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe ends his active service
Thursday, 3 p.m.: Christoph 4 lands on the landing deck at Hannover Medical School (MHH) with a dull thump of its rotors. This is the last landing in active service for Volker Hubrich, senior Johanniter emergency paramedic and HEMS-TC (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services Technical Crew Member). After 37 years of service in air rescue, the 64-year-old is ending his active service. "I've flown many a kilometer and mission as an HEMS-TC and emergency rescuer," says Hubrich. "I've flown a total of 18,212 missions."
The Christoph 4 rescue helicopter has been stationed at Hannover Medical School since 1972 and is one of 12 civil defense helicopters in Germany. In addition to the pilot and the emergency paramedic, an emergency physician from the Clinical Department of Trauma Surgery always flies in the Christoph 4. In his 37 years of service, Volker Hubrich has introduced many of our junior physicians to the air rescue service.
"Volker Hubrich is a veteran of active service who has been synonymous with rescue helicopters at Johanniter all these years. This is testament to his great reliability and quality. We would like to thank Volker Hubrich for the many years of cooperation and his commitment to air rescue. In addition, he has also spent decades training the next generation at the Johanniter Academy and passing on his knowledge," says Hannes Wendler, member of the Johanniter regional board of the Lower Saxony/Bremen regional association.
The Clinical Department of Trauma Surgery wishes Volker Hubrich all the best for his retirement!

Certification in geriatric traumatology
11.01.2021
After 2 1/2 years of interdisciplinary and interprofessional preparation, the Trauma Surgery Clinical Department of the MHH has been certified as the only DGU® Trauma Center for the Elderly in the Hanover region. This has created a framework structure for the care of very old patients with accident injuries, which has already led to significant improvements.
The further development of this geriatric trauma center will remain a constant challenge, taking into account demographic conditions and the framework conditions of the healthcare system.
Christoph 4 flies 800,000th mission for the BBK
21.07.2020
On the occasion of the celebration of the 800,000th mission, they came together in Bonn Dransdorf on 17.07.20, of course in compliance with all hygiene regulations: On 16.04.2020, Christoph 4 had flown the 800,000th mission of the civil defense helicopters. 14-year-old Joshua had to be searched for, found and given medical treatment in rough terrain after a mountain bike fall. Thanks to the help from the air, this was done quickly and the patient is doing well again today.
Several institutions are involved in the Christoph 4 air rescue. Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. Landesverband Niedersachsen/Bremen is responsible for the operation of the helicopter and provides the emergency paramedics and HEMS-TC. The pilots belong to the Federal Police, Northern Air Force Base Gifhorn, and carry out the maintenance and servicing of the helicopter. The emergency physicians have come from the MHH's Trauma Surgery Clinical Department for almost 50 years. Dr. Christian Macke has been the medical director since 2016. The state of Lower Saxony is responsible for the air rescue base.
