Studying in Germany
The number of study places at the Medical School is limited, as at other higher education institutions, so admission is based on the numerus clausus (NC). There is a nationwide admission restriction for human medicine and dentistry study programs. There are also quotas for foreign students.
There are also admission restrictions for the MHH Master's degree courses and the Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science. These are specific to each study program, more information can be found here.
You need a university entrance qualification to apply for a place on a degree program. The application procedure differs depending on whether this was obtained in Germany or in an EU or non-EU country. To check whether your existing school or university degree is recognized in Germany, you can use the Anabin database. The database provides information on the evaluation of foreign educational certificates and helps authorities, employers and private individuals to classify a foreign qualification in the German education system.
Applications to study human medicine and dentistry at the MHH are made via the Foundation for University Admissions and its information portal. There you will find information on which degree programs you can apply for, how to apply for a place, what you should consider when selecting your study options and which deadlines are important for you.
International applicants should note the following: Please check the website of the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung to find out whether you are on an equal footing with German applicants in the application process. If this is not the case, you will receive access to German universities via Uni-Assist e.V. You can find out for which study programmes at which universities you have to apply to Uni-Assist on the corresponding homepage.
General information for all students
In this section you will find helpful information on your application for the study programs at Hannover Medical School. The following website provides a clear overview of what you need to consider when applying for a place to study in Germany. Before you submit your application, you should also compile a few documents . You can find out what these are and what you should pay attention to here.
Application for the first semester of human medicine or dentistry
In Germany, applications to study human medicine and dentistry and the allocation of study places is carried out via a centralized procedure and not directly via the universities. However, it depends both on your nationality and where you obtained your higher education entrance qualification whether you have to apply via the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Hochschulstart) or Uni-Assist e. V.. Please refer to the following page for a helpful overview.
For prospective students who have obtained their higher education entrance qualification in an EU country, the application process is the same as for applicants with a German higher education entrance qualification. This is done via Hochschulstart.de.
German language skills (A/A+) are required if the higher education entrance qualification was not obtained in German. You can find out which language certificates fall into categories A and A+ and are accepted here. A summary of all important information can be found on the Student Office website.
For all further information about the application, please visit the Student Office website.
We wish you every success with your application!
If you wish to apply with a higher education entrance qualification from outside the EU or EEA, you must do so via Uni-Assist e.V.. To submit your application, you will need to provide a category A or A+ language certificate. If you already have a language certificate, you can use this table to check which category your certificate belongs to. You must also submit a TestAS with the study field-specific test module "Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences" in German. After checking your documents, Uni-Assist will forward your application to the MHH.
Please note that admission is only possible for the winter semester and that the university's application deadline (at the MHH it is 15.07) is the same as Uni-Assist's deadline. Your documents must be submitted in full before the application deadline. Please also note that there is a fee of at least 75 euros for processing your documents. Visit the Student Office website for current deadlines.
Applicants who have to attend the Studienkolleg also send their application to Uni-Assist e.V. Here you can check for yourself whether you can study in Germany directly with your certificates or whether you have to attend the Studienkolleg first. The Studienkolleg takes place at the MHH in the summer and winter semester, the application deadline is 15.01 or 15.07 of the respective year.
Visit the website of the MHH Student Office for more information on the application process.

Application for a Master's or Bachelor's degree program
Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Biomedical Data Science, Public Health, Infectious Diseases and One Health, Midwifery Science
If you would like to apply for a study programme, you should find out more about the respective Institute. There you will also find information about the application procedure and the respective application deadlines. Please note that the application deadlines for each study program may vary. You should therefore check the relevant course pages in good time to find out about the applicable deadline. We recommend getting in touch with the contact person for the respective study programme at an early stage to ensure that you are suitable for the course and to find out about the recognition of your existing qualifications, the application deadlines and the application procedure.
One aim of the Bologna Process was to standardize and recognize degrees throughout Europe. This has helped to simplify access to further study programmes for graduates from EU/EEA countries. Nevertheless, academic degrees are not automatically recognized throughout the EU. You should therefore check the "anabin" database to see how your university and degree are assessed in Germany. This is important because when you enrol for a Master's degree program at the Hannover Medical School, you must confirm that you have completed and provided proof of a suitable previous Bachelor's degree or a comparable study programme at Leibniz Universität Hannover or another German or foreign university (with corresponding language certificate) at the start of your studies at the Hannover Medical School.
We also recommend that you get in touch with the contact person for the study program you are interested in at an early stage.
Further information and a video explaining how to use the "anabin" database can be found here.
If you have a university degree from a non-EU/EEA country, you must apply via Uni-Assist. Your documents must be submitted in full by the relevant deadline (usually July 15). However, it is advisable to submit your documents as early as possible.
Please note that the MHH Master's degree programs require a separate admission procedure and a written knowledge test.
We therefore recommend that you get in touch with the contact person for the study program you are interested in as early as possible.
