Education
Structure of the training
With the 2014 training course, we are launching a modern, modularized training concept. This combines the intensive, clinical, patient-oriented training to become a speech therapist with the corresponding theoretical foundations from the various medical professions. In addition to professional and methodological skills, the development of personal and social-communicative key qualifications is of central importance. The basic practical training on patients takes place under professional supervision within the School for Speech Therapy. The training and examination regulations for speech therapists (LogAPrO) are an integral part of the modularized training. After three years, a successful examination at the School for Speech Therapy entitles the student to use the professional title: state-certified speech therapist.
Start of training
The training starts annually on October 1.
You can find information on the next start of training here.
Training contract & training allowance
All trainees who start their training sign a training contract. This ensures transparency with regard to the training process, requirements and proof of achievement.
The training allowance is staggered per training year according to the TVAöD as follows:
- Year of training € 1,068.26
- Year of training € 1,118.20
- Year of training € 1,164.02
Costs
In accordance with the TVA-L, teaching materials are free of charge for training at the School for Speech Therapy. At the end of the training, there are one-off costs for the examination registration and for the application for the professional license in the amount of approx. 150,- €.
Practical training
Practical training is very important to us. As early as the second year, you will treat your first patients on the school's premises under the supervision of a lecturer.
Thanks to the connection to the Clinical Department and Polyclinic for Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology (Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Dr. M. Ptok), you can gain your first practical experience as a trainee in the outpatient clinic. Insights into speech therapy diagnostics and treatment in everyday clinical practice are provided both through cooperation with the Clinical Department of Neurology at the MHH with aphasia patients in the acute phase and through practical experience with laryngectomized patients in cooperation with the Clinical Department of ENT.
We have been offering group projects (see Prevention & Therapy) in the various speech therapist fields of work for several years. As a trainee, you can gain practical experience in the area of pre- and aftercare and acquire skills in working with groups.
Training and studies
Since 2005, the School for Speech Therapy at the MHH and its cooperation partner, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts HAWK Hildesheim/ Holzminden/ Göttingen, have offered their students the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) after a total of 4½ years. Studies and school are closely interlinked: additional courses are offered at the HAWK during the course, which supplement the course content of the technical college training and expand it with additional, relevant topics. The course is therefore divided into three parts:
- the undergraduate training to become a speech therapist at the School for Speech Therapy at the MHH
- the 1st study phase during the training at the University of Applied Sciences (HAWK) and the School for Speech Therapy at the MHH, and
- the 2nd study phase at the HAWK- Hildesheim (3 semesters of attendance studies)
Participation in the first study phase is voluntary. Students participating in the cooperation take two supplementary modules (scientific work and the discipline of speech therapy and interdisciplinary framework conditions) parallel to the training, which take place at the school for 16 hours and at the HAWK Hildesheim site for 6 study days. In addition, 280 hours of self-study are required. Both modules are completed with a written exam. The modularized training at the MHH is coordinated with the additional study content at the HAWK. Participation in the cooperation courses costs 80 euros guest student fee per semester (total 320.00 €). Subsequently, the 2nd study phase can be completed at the HAWK without an entrance examination. Further information can be found on the HAWK Hildesheim website.
