REBIRTH Active School

The lack of daily exercise among children and adolescents has been steadily increasing for years - as evidenced by data from the Robert Koch Institute (2014). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adolescents engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to high-intensity physical activity every day (WHO, 2010). While this recommendation is still met by around 50% of children of pre-school age, the proportion falls alarmingly to only around 10% among adolescents. There are many reasons for this:

Digital leisure time

  • High media consumption (smartphone, tablet, gaming)
  • Less outdoor play

Everyday school life

  • Long periods of sitting without breaks for exercise
  • Too little physical education
  • Pressure to perform instead of promoting physical activity

Environment & infrastructure

  • Lack of play and exercise areas
  • Unsafe routes (traffic, lack of supervision)

Family environment

  • Role models with little physical activity
  • Lack of time & organizational hurdles

Social & psychological factors

  • Low self-confidence or overweight
  • Bullying & social exclusion

This is where school can make a big difference.

More exercise, greater well-being and better conditions for learning - directly anchored in everyday school life.

Rebirth Active School has been successfully tested in studies at the MHH to ensure a sound, evidence-based foundation for the integration of physical activity in everyday school life.

This video was created in collaboration with the Clinical Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery (HTTG) as part of the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence.
