Center for Haematological Neoplasia (HAEZ)

Head: Prof. Dr. med. Florian Heidel
Center Coordinator: PD Dr. med. Philipp Ivanyi

The Haematological Neoplasia Center (HAEZ) is part of the Clinical Department of Haematology, Oncology, Haemostaseology and Stem Cell Transplantation and is led by Prof. Dr. med. Florian Heidel and coordinated by PD Dr. med. Philipp Ivanyi in close cooperation with the Oncology Centre (OZ, Head: Dr. med. S. Isfort) of the CCC-H.

An interdisciplinary and multi-professional team of experienced specialists and assistant physicians, nurses with specialist oncology training and other qualified staff care for inpatients and outpatients suffering from a haematological disease. These include, among others

  • leukemias
  • Plasma cell neoplasms and lymphomas
  • Myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative neoplasms
  • Hemostasis disorders
  • Benign hematology

The HAEZ offers the complete spectrum of therapy options. These include conventional chemotherapy and antibody therapies, including bi-specific antibodies and antibody conjugates, as well as molecularly targeted therapies. Most of the therapies are prepared in the Central Pharmacy of the MHH. High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation as well as allogeneic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy approaches, such as CAR T-cell therapies, are also routinely used. In addition, where indicated, watchful waiting or active surveillance is carried out under structured monitoring, as well as interdisciplinary and multi-professional supportive management e.g. utilizing blood products from the Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Transplant Engineering at the MHH. The HAEZ works closely with the Institute of Cell Therapeutics (Director: Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. F. Heidel; Lead: Dr. L. Arseniev), where cell products for stem cell transplants, CAR-T cell therapy and other innovative cell therapy procedures can be produced. Depending on the disease situation, participation in a wide range of clinical trials is offered.

Diagnostics, therapy and therapy evaluation take place regularly in the HAEZ's interdisciplinary conferences, which are also accessible digitally (VITU) for external referring physicians on request and for which image material can also be sent digitally:

  • Lymphoma conference
  • CAR-T conference
  • KMT Conference
  • Leukemia Conference
  • Conference for chronic myeloid neoplasms
  • Molecular Tumor Board (of the CCC-H/OZ)
  • If required, cases are presented at the CCC-H/OZ organ conferences

The HAEZ has its own diagnostic area, organizationally assigned to the Central Laboratory of the MHH, which enables the rapid and high-quality diagnosis of acute leukaemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma as well as other haematological diagnoses. Regular certifications are carried out in order to maintain and optimize a high quality standard. Certification according to "DIN EN ISO 9001" for quality management takes place regularly, as does accreditation according to JACIE for the area of allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Regular patient feedback via the Central QM Administrative Unit ("Feedback and Complaints Management") is also an important process of continuous improvement, as is cooperation with self-help groups and patient advocates.
