Patients

Dear patients and relatives,

In the following, we would like to give you an overview of the range of services offered by our Clinical Department. The Clinical Department of Neurology has 92 inpatient beds. 15 beds are located in our stroke unit and intermediate care unit (stroke unit). The remaining beds are spread across our normal wards (Ward 35, Ward 43, Private Ward 45 and Ward 48) as well as the Interdisciplinary Oncology Ward (33IOS) and the Intensive Care Unit.

We treat the entire spectrum of neurology at university level. We have a particular clinical focus on the treatment of neurodegenerative, neuromuscular, neuroimmunological, neuroinfectious and neurovascular diseases. We also offer special consultation hours for these diseases.

Inpatient admission

Please arrange an elective admission appointment at our Clinical Department with your neurology practice. For inpatient admission, you must be referred by your neurology practice. The appointments are coordinated by our bed management team. Please understand that we have waiting times for inpatient admission appointments. If there is a particular urgency, please contact your attending physician.

Please bring all previous documents from previous medical treatment with you to the inpatient admission. If you have already had MRI scans or other imaging beforehand, please bring these scans in the form of CDs with you to your inpatient stay. The more preliminary information we have at the beginning of your inpatient stay, the better we can plan your diagnosis and treatment and make your stay with us as short as possible. Please also bring a list of all the medication you currently take on a regular basis with you to your inpatient admission.

On the day of admission

On the day of your planned admission appointment, you will be contacted by our bed management team by telephone between 7:30 am and 9:00 am, unless otherwise agreed.
The bed management team will clarify whether we can admit you on the planned date. Due to a high volume of emergencies, it is not always possible for us to keep scheduled appointments. We ask for your understanding. If it is not possible for you to be admitted as planned, the bed management team will immediately arrange an alternative admission date with you.
After contacting the bed management team, please make your way to us immediately. We are happy to see elective admissions on our wards until 11 am. Please report to the central admission desk for MHH inpatients and be admitted to the ward indicated. When you arrive on the ward, you will first be greeted by our nursing team. They will assign you to your room and bed and conduct an initial admission interview with you. The ward physician treating you will conduct a detailed admission interview with you in the early afternoon. You will also be seen by the senior ward physician and further diagnostic and therapeutic planning will be made on the day of admission.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the bed management team:

Inpatient stay

You will be cared for around the clock by our nursing team on the ward. The ward physicians are present on the wards from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Outside of these hours, our hospital is staffed by a duty physician. If you have urgent, emergency complaints, the duty physician can visit you at any time. In such a situation, please contact your nurse first, who will then inform the duty physician. However, we are not able to conduct educational discussions or discussions with relatives outside of regular ward working hours unless this is absolutely necessary.

On weekdays, daily ward rounds are carried out by the ward physicians. On Mondays and Thursdays, the ward rounds are supervised by senior physicians.

Discharge

Your discharge from our treatment will be determined by the senior ward physician in charge. This decision is usually made the day before and discussed with you. On the day of discharge, we would ask you to leave your room by 10 a.m. if possible, or to vacate your bed and pack up your personal belongings. You will receive a detailed medical report from us for the physician providing further treatment on the day of discharge.

Outpatient clinics/special consultations

We would also be happy to see you in one of our outpatient clinics. We offer special outpatient clinics in our key areas:

Neuroimmunology

Movement disorders

ALS/neuromuscular consultations

Neurovascular consultation

Infusion outpatient clinic

Private consultation

We ask for your understanding that we are unable to offer general neurological consultations outside of our special consultation hours. A referral from your neurology practice is required to attend our outpatient consultation hours. If you have not visited us before, please send us your neurologist's questions together with your contact details in advance. You are welcome to do this by e-mail, fax or post. Our polyclinic team will then work with the outpatient clinic managers to determine the best consultation hours and appointment time for you. You will then be contacted by us regarding the further procedure and an appointment.

For your outpatient appointment, please bring all previous documents (in copy) and the imaging on CD as well as the written findings to enable a comprehensive consultation.

Please understand that we have waiting times for outpatient appointments. These waiting times are due to the high demand and our limited capacity. We would like to be able to take the necessary time for the consultation and treatment of patients who present to us. Our polyclinic maintains monthly waiting lists for this purpose. You will be contacted by our polyclinic team with an appointment proposal. It is important that you confirm this to us. Appointments that have not been confirmed up to one week before the appointment will be canceled by us and assigned to other patients.

Please understand that we are unable to provide information about your clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment over the phone. This is only possible in a personal consultation.

We have recently opened an outpatient infusion clinic where infusions can be administered in an outpatient setting.
