Health services research is concerned with the systematic analysis and evaluation of health care structures, processes and outcomes in the health care system. It focuses in particular on everyday medical care. Health services research examines how health services are provided, who has access to them, what results are achieved and how this affects the health of population groups.

The aim is to research and improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of medical care. Health services research provides important findings and the necessary scientific evidence for everyday care. This benefits patients and all stakeholders in the healthcare system, including medical and nursing staff, health insurance companies, hospitals and care facilities for the elderly, medical self-administration and political decision-makers.
