Information on the Prostate Cancer Center
Our interdisciplinary prostate cancer center coordinates the consultation, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and organizes the care of patients and their relatives. Whether you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer for the first time or have come to us with advanced tumor disease: You are in the best hands with us.
The Prostate Cancer Center is managed by the Clinical Department of Urology and Urological Oncology. A special feature of this center is the close cooperation between different specialist departments in order to provide you with comprehensive treatment. Thanks to this close cooperation between different institutions, we can offer you as a patient a broad range of diagnostics and therapies that you will only find in a few Clinical Departments.
As a university hospital, Hannover Medical School is home to a large number of specialist areas that work across departments. Cancer can therefore be treated effectively and in a patient-oriented manner. With the Prostate Cancer Center, Prof. Dr. med. Markus Kuczyk's Clinical Department has established an official point of contact for prostate cancer patients, which ensures all-round care in accordance with the standards of the German Cancer Society. The interdisciplinary center of the Clinical Department of Urology and Urological Oncology specializes in differentiated diagnostics and individualized therapy and, with a number of contractually regulated internal and external cooperation partners, provides a closed service and care chain that is hardly comparable.
We, the Clinical Department of Urology and Urological Oncology and the cooperation partners of the Prostate Cancer Center at Hannover Medical School, place our patients at the center of our actions and are committed to this mission statement.
Our daily work is characterized by the guiding principle "Your quality of life is our goal" . It is an attempt to meet all your wishes and possible fears and to offer you top medical care not only in the area of supramaximal care, but also for "simple" urological problems.
Who are we?
The Prostate Cancer Center consists of a network of specialists from various medical and nursing disciplines and ensures the care of all patients with prostate diseases. This makes us a reliable partner in our country's social system.
In addition, the Prostate Cancer Center is committed to economic management and strives for the acceptance and support of cost bearers.
What do we stand for?
It is important to us to respond to the individual and personal needs of our patients so that they can take an active role in the decision-making process and implementation of diagnostics and therapy ("informed consent"). We attach great importance to the integration of relatives and the support of the psychosocial environment. In this way, we implement our major objective of respecting the dignity and self-determination of every patient:
-
We base all medical and nursing services on the current state of scientific knowledge.
-
We are open to further developments and innovations.
-
We work well together in the interests of our patients.
-
Together, we ensure a good working atmosphere in which striving for the best results is a pleasure and we feel comfortable as employees.
-
We do everything we can to constantly develop personally and professionally.
What values are we committed to?
-
Humanity and integrity are the foundations of our daily actions.
-
We show respect for everyone.
-
Our actions are always characterized by tolerance and consideration.
-
The quality standards we apply should be transparent to the public and form the basis for improvement measures. The Prostate Cancer Center thus follows the central mission statement of our Facilities or Institutions, which emphasizes strengthening the competence of all employees for the benefit of patients.
What do we want to achieve?
-
Patient satisfaction by asking and assessing the extent to which the needs and expectations of our patients are met.
-
Quality-supported, guideline-based patient care by an interdisciplinary team of experts in the field of prostate cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.
-
Continuous further development of our quality of results with regard to the state of medical services.
-
High cure rates and low complication rates.
-
To be an innovative high-performance center.
-
Working in partnership with cooperation partners and referring physicians.
-
Consistently transparent rules for all processes and compliance with them.
A special feature of our Prostate Cancer Center is the regular interdisciplinary conferences.
Our prostate cancer consultation, the so-called pre-therapeutic conference , takes place every week. Prior to treatment, each patient case is discussed in this conference, existing documents such as radiological images (e.g. CT, skeletal scintigraphy) or pathological findings are reviewed and evaluated and, based on this, an individual treatment is determined in close consultation with the patient. Urology and radiotherapy are always involved in the pre-therapeutic conference.
There is also a weekly urological-oncological tumor conference involving the urology, radiology and oncology departments, in which patient cases are discussed together.
Your journey to our prostate cancer center begins with your presentation in our prostate cancer consultation or in our general consultation - regardless of whether you have been newly diagnosed with prostate cancer or have already been treated elsewhere.
Patients and their relatives can make an appointment via the channels listed on the contact page. During the consultation, we will first collect the therapy-relevant findings from your documents, your medical history and the images you bring with you.
These findings are then incorporated into a consultation on the available treatment options. In most cases, the result is an interdisciplinary therapy recommendation that is given to you and your treating physicians. Our aim here is to provide neutral advice that is not intended to convince you as a patient of a particular therapy, but to give you the basis for a well-founded therapy decision.
If, based on this consultation, you decide to undergo treatment at one of the Facilities or Institutions belonging to the Prostate Cancer Center, we will plan the next steps for you.
If you opt for treatment at the Prostate Cancer Center, you are opting for a reliable, highly standardized therapy, regardless of which option you choose.
The guidelines of the German Society of Urology(DGU) and the European Association of Urology(EAU) are the benchmark. Your therapy is mapped out in clearly defined treatment paths, which allows us to guarantee a high and continuous quality of treatment and patient safety.
The main cooperation partners are the Clinical Departments and Facilities or Institutions that participate in the pre- and post-therapeutic conferences, i.e. are significantly involved in the therapy decision and its implementation.
The comprehensive care of our patients at the MHH is characterized by a large number of in-house cooperation partners. The common goals of all partners involved are high-quality patient care, a short, reliable and standardized exchange of information and a commitment to the basic ethical values of the Prostate Cancer Center.
