Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2025 - Working together for more awareness, prevention and support

Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2025 is once again a global celebration of awareness, prevention and support for all those affected. Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in women. Men can also be affected by breast cancer, even if the disease occurs much less frequently in them. The CCC Hannover is also actively involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year. Under the motto "Breast cancer (not) a problem?!", the Klaus Bahlsen Center for Integrative Oncology and the Onko-Stammtisch, a breast cancer self-help group from Hanover, will be providing information on breast cancer in the MHH shopping arcade.

Information stand: Breast cancer (not) a problem?

  • Dates: Wednesday, October 15, 2025 and Thursday, October 16, 2025
  • each from 10:00 to 15:00
  • On site in the shopping arcade. Accessible via the main entrance (building K6)

At its information stand, the "Onko-Stammtisch" self-help group will be drawing particular attention to the challenges experienced by breast cancer sufferers after treatment. The statement "Breast cancer can be treated well!" is usually true - but the disease and the therapies often leave their mark. Once the primary treatment has been completed, the big question for many is: "What happens next?" The focus is on topics such as anti-hormone therapy, exhaustion, long-term and late effects, metastases and more. It is particularly important to the Onko-Stammtisch to provide solution-oriented information and to present all possible support options; for example, yoga teacher and patient Elske Leopold reports on the positive effects of yoga.

The Klaus Bahlsen Center for Integrative Oncology complements the offer and advises on the holistic treatment of cancer patients at the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) of the MHH. Visitors to the stand will learn how those affected can actively contribute to a positive course of the disease and treatment. Many cancer patients ask themselves what options are available to alleviate the side effects and late effects of tumor therapy and improve their quality of life. These include naturopathic consultations, offers to strengthen self-healing powers, relaxation techniques and complementary nursing treatments. The Klaus Bahlsen Center supplements oncological complementary medicine with psycho-oncological support services, nutritional advice, palliative medical services as well as sports and rehabilitative medical approaches. All services are also aimed at patients with metastases

Breast cancer prevention

Targeted prevention and early detection is crucial

With targeted prevention, early detection and modern treatment, lives can be saved and the chances of recovery significantly improved. If detected early, breast cancer can be treated well in most cases. From the age of 30, women can go for a breast cancer screening examination once a year, where the breasts and armpits are palpated and the breasts are examined for changes. Between the ages of 50 and 69, women can have a mammogram every two years in addition to the palpation examination. This involves examining the breast with low-dose X-rays. Since July 1, 2024, mammography screening has also been open to women aged 70 to 75. In addition, experts recommend regular self-examination and deliberate palpation of the breast. Dr. Marlene Röttger, a specialist at the Clinical Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the MHH, explains exactly how this works and what to look out for at https://www.mhh.de/ccc/brustkrebsmonat-22.
