Sports therapy and rehabilitation for cancer

A patient is sitting on an ergometer. Next to her is an instructor from the Institute of Sports Medicine.

Physical activity and training are used for prevention, sports therapy and rehabilitation of complaints of the internal organ systems as well as the musculoskeletal system. For patients, the Clinical Department for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine is the central point of contact at the MHH.

Sports therapy

Scientific studies show that regular exercise can reduce disease- and therapy-related stress. Sports therapy can improve the patient's ability to tolerate therapy, cope with their illness and speed up their professional rehabilitation. Patients with cancer can thus improve their performance, even if they have not previously been active in sport.

The Department of Sports Medicine focuses on the areas of prevention, sports therapy and performance diagnostics. The aim of sports medical activation is the acute and sustainable improvement of cardiopulmonary function, strength and coordination. The training takes place at an individually adapted intensity under professional guidance. The programs are suitable for both beginners and advanced users. They are already available to patients who are still undergoing therapy. Within the Klaus Bahlsen Center for Integrative Oncology we advise outpatients on their questions relating to sport and exercise and offer them individual training and support options - whether on site or with offers that they can use at home. In a close exchange between the medical treatment teams and sports physicians, the sports medicine programs (individual/group therapy) are adapted to the patients.

Unique in Germany is the sports medicine offer for seriously ill children and adolescents (3 to 17 years of age) who are being treated in the pediatric oncology department at the MHH. A separate training room has been set up for this purpose, among other things. The individually tailored, modular sports therapy takes place in bed/at the bedside or in the children's training room.

Good to know: Many clubs offer special sports programs for people with cancer. You can find a list on the website of the Behinderten-Sportverband Niedersachsen e.V. (Lower Saxony Disabled Sports Association).

Rehabilitation medicine

The Department of Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine focuses on the treatment of physical concomitant diseases of tumor diseases and the consequences of therapy. In addition, suitable rehabilitative questionnaires can be used to determine individual rehabilitation needs and recommendations for suitable rehabilitation facilities can be made.

Cancer patients receivein the outpatient sector a comprehensive range of therapies for follow-up treatment after inpatient hospital stays, after inpatient or all-day outpatient rehabilitation measures and for complex chronic functional disorders. All therapies are prescribed following a medical examination and additional assessments and are carried out by highly qualified physicians and therapists. In addition, allinpatients cancan also receive physical and rehabilitative medicine measures including rehabilitation medical consultations, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, swallowing therapy, hydrotherapy, massage and lymphatic therapy at the request of the specialist departments treating them. Special services include mobile early rehabilitation, which is also possible in the intensive care unit.
