Notes for students at the MHH
Students who are also responsible for nursing are usually "invisible" in everyday UNI life, even though they make up around 10% of students. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely for this reason, we have put together some information for you here.
You can get individual advice from the Family Service of theEqual Opportunities Office as well as via the AStA department Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities (soziales[at]mhh-asta.de).
We would like to invite you to join a mailing list for all students with caring responsibilities at the MHH. The list will be used to send invitations to events at the MHH, information on caring for relatives at the university, new laws, initiatives, etc. If you are interested in receiving regular information on the subject of "Studying with caring responsibilities", please send an e-mail with the subject "Inclusion in mailing list "Students with caring responsibilities" to familienservice/at/mh-hannover.de. The list is also intended as a means of communication and exchange. You are also welcome to forward your e-mails to the subscribers of the list. The mailing list is an anonymous list, i.e. only the employees of the Family Service have access to the list of subscribers.

Online teaching Courses take place in presence. Lecturers can decide whether they also offer courses online or only online - synchronously or asynchronously. Students are not entitled to this. Hybrid courses involve a significantly higher workload for lecturers, for which the personnel framework conditions are lacking. As part of the family-friendly university, efforts are being made to better establish online teaching, which will probably take some time to implement.

Fluxx emergency support: Fluxxfon_Number: 0511-16832110
The MHH is a partner company of Fluxxa care service offered by the state capital and the Hanover region. In emergencies, Fluxx provides short-term care (not Nursing) for relatives in need of care, advises on care bottlenecks, accompanies outside the home and provides transportation services. Students pay 2 euros per hour.
Financial support
Students with care responsibilities who care for a relative or a relative with a care degree can be exempted from tuition fees (§ 12 para. 3 no. 3, § 13 para. 1 no. 3 Lower Saxony Higher Education Act).
Students who care for a close relative or a close relative with at least care degree three in their home environment (§ 15 para. 3 no. 2 Federal financial aid) can apply for an extension of the Federal financial aid for a reasonable period of time (maximum 2 semesters) if the maximum funding period has been exceeded. The extension of Federal financial aid is a case-by-case decision of the responsible Office for Educational Support, which is made on the basis of the proven degree of care and a credible declaration by the student. A financial increase in funding, as is the case for students with children, is not possible.
The flyer"Housing benefit for students"published by the City of Hanover in March 2019 provides brief and concise information on housing benefit advice, eligibility and application.
Students who exceed the age of 30 are no longer covered by the favorable student health insurance.
The MDK Reform Act has removed the limit up to the 14th semester and added an exception, after which reasons for impediments can be recognized and membership extended. Nursing of relatives, raising children, illness (at least 3 months), disability, committee work and others are reasons for an extension (see § 190 para. 9 no. 2 sentence 2 SGB V).
Impediment due to Nursing of relatives:
"Family and personal reasons Family reasons are, for example, illnesses and disabilities of family members, insofar as this necessitated care or nursing by the student. In this case, the insurance obligation can be extended by the period during which participation in studies was not possible or only possible to a limited extent. An extension can also be recognized in the event of the student's own illness or disability, provided that participation in the course of study was not possible or only possible to a limited extent as a result." (GKV-Spitzenverband 2020, p. 15f)
Contributions to pension insurance are covered by long-term care insurance, provided that the relative receiving care has at least care level 2. Nursing must be provided for at least 10 hours within seven days (at least 2 days a week). The professional activity is limited to a maximum of 30 hours per week. Studying does not count as a professional activity, so students can receive pension contributions! Long-term care insurance only pays insurance contributions if the above criteria are met and the status of a caregiver within the meaning of long-term care insurance is given. The contribution amount is determined by the degree of care and the extent of the care activity (see § 44 SGB XI).
