In the 6th year of your studies, you will complete the practical year after passing the 2nd section of the medical examination. The PJ office looks after all students who are enrolled at a German university.
Students who are enrolled at a foreign university should contact the colleagues in the International Office if they wish to complete their PJ directly at the MHH, or apply directly to the relevant teaching hospital.
► Please bring your tablet or - very analog - a pad/pencil for any notes.

The two-day M3 state examination (oral and practical examination) takes place in May/June (for the May PJ cohort) or November/December (for the November PJ cohort) in accordance with the ÄApprO.
You can find further information for you as an MHH candidate under the menu item below.
Please fill in the spaces marked in red and then email them to info.studium@mh-hannover.de for processing.
PJ OrderIMPORTANT: Please register with your student e-mail address, NOT your private one!
Special feature: external applicants can only register via the online tool after prior consultation with the Institute of General Practice (Dr. Anja Hesse, e-mail: Lehre-Allgemeinmedizin@mh-hannover.de) and the PJ office. Arrangements should be made at least 9 months before the start of the PJ year.
When you start your PJ, you must have a valid occupational health certificate (risk of infection and wet work), which you can submit on request to the HR Department of the academic teaching hospital or directly to the Clinical Department of the MHH where you are completing your tertial(s).
The examination must be carried out at the Occupational Health Service of your home university. The certificate must be valid until the end of your M3 examination period (until 30.06. for the May PJ cohort, until 31.12. for the November PJ cohort, in each case after the end of the 3rd tertial).
If your protective clothing is not provided by the academic teaching hospital or if you are completing your PJ directly at the MHH, you can obtain an authorization certificate for the clothing store from the PJ office. This only applies to MHH students. Clothing for external students is issued by the Clinical Department/Institute where you are completing your tertial.
At present, protective clothing is only issued by the clothing store by prior appointment. You can contact the staff from Monday to Thursday between 08:00 and 10:00 on 0176 1532 8747 (if you are calling in-house: 17-8747). Before making an appointment , you must apply for the authorization form by e-mail at the PJ office.
You are responsible for organizing a stay abroad during your PJ. It is therefore in your own interest to carefully read through the information sheet on the PJ abroad in preparation for your application in order to ensure recognition by the LPA Niedersachsen.
The list of teaching hospitals recognized worldwide for a PJ stay by the LPA NRW as of 24.03.2026 can be found here. It is only used for the initial pre-selection of the hospitals, not the subjects (see above information sheet).
The clinics on the list as of 17.02.25 will, as part of a transitional arrangement agreed with the LPA Niedersachsen, only be recognized for the 2nd tertial of the PJ November 25 (09.03. - 28.06.2026) and for the 1st tertial of the PJ May 26 (18.05. - 06.09.2026). Therefore, you should definitely check your already planned/fixed international tertials in this regard.
2 forms are mandatory for recognition by the LPA Lower Saxony:
1. the bilingual certificate for the PJ abroad (signed by the chief physician in the Clinical Department) can be found here.
2. the so-called student equivalence (signed by the dean of the university) can be found here.
Further information on the Erasmus program and funding options can be found on the International Office website.
If you are completing one or more tertial(s) at the MHH or one of its academic teaching hospitals, please use the tertial certificates, which you can find here which you can download here. You can also find the bilingual certificate for the PJ abroad there. Please also note the instructions for completing the form, which you can find at the link above.
If you are completing one or more tertials externally at another German university or one of its teaching hospitals, please use the tertial certificates of the host university(ies). Please note: the certificate(s) must not contain the logo or letterhead of the host university/teaching hospital. If in doubt, use the blank form from the licensing regulations.
The signature date may be your last working day. If you take absences at the end of a tertial, this can also be before the official end of the tertial. Please note, however, that the tertial period must still be as indicated in the overview.
1. the PJ certificates can be submitted directly to the responsible state examination office. The PJ office of the MHH is no longer involved in the preliminary examination.
2. the logbook is mandatory and must be submitted at the M3 examination. For external tertials, please use the logbook of the host university if you are asked to do so.
3. participation in the online evaluation by the MHH is mandatory for both MHH students and external students.
An anonymized evaluation is carried out after each tertial and participation is mandatory for both internal and external students. At the end of a tertial (1st & 2nd tertial: approx. 1 - 2 weeks before the end, 3rd tertial: approx. 4 weeks before the end) you will receive a link to the evaluation by e-mail from the Evaluation Office.
MHH students can view the evaluations in ILIAS . The evaluation reports based on student re-registrations from the last three years have been compiled on this page.
The so-called logbooks are mandatory from 01.04.2013. They set out the training objectives of the respective subject (internal medicine, surgery, elective course). The supervising physician must confirm the activities listed in the logbook by signing it. A PJ certificate may only be issued on the basis of a properly kept logbook (see also MHH PJ regulations).
The logbooks are sent to students by post by the PJ office before the start of the PJ. Therefore, please ensure that you always enter your current address in the PJ portal.
You can view the individual MHH logbooks here (pdf). They are for information purposes only and cannot be printed out!
Students who would like to complete the entire PJ or individual tertials part-time must book their requests within the hardship periods after prior consultation with the PJ office. Please note: not all teaching hospitals are available for a part-time PJ. Further details can be obtained from the PJ office.
There are also different regulations regarding working hours and absences during the part-time PJ.
For the entire part-time PJ:
Part-time for individual tertials:
It is at the discretion of the respective Clinical Departments/Institutes whether and to what extent an expense allowance is paid. It is also at their discretion whether it is paid for the period of absence.
