Submission of tissue samples
Tissue samples must always be sent in neutral buffered 4% formalin in leak-proof sample containers (cooling is not necessary). The volume ratio of tissue to formalin should be approximately 1:5 (optimally 1:10). Fixation times should not exceed 24 to 36 hours.
Please note that suboptimal pre-analytical conditions (e.g. incorrect or inadequate fixation) can limit the diagnostic evaluation of a sample or even make it impossible.
If you would like detailed advice on submitting samples, please contact the office (0511/532-4501).
Special fixation is required for the examination of bone marrow biopsies, which is ensured by requesting our special shipping containers(Hartleib.Ingeborg@MH-Hannover.de). Blood (1-2) and bone marrow (3-5) smears should be air-dried and unfixed.
Tissue samples for special immunohistological or molecular pathological additional examinations can also be sent in the form of a kerosene block. In the case of requests for mutation analysis, care must be taken to ensure that the tissue samples are tumor-bearing.
Cytological preparations should be sent as fresh as possible in leak-proof sample containers with a maximum volume of up to 20 ml of punctate fluid. Due to the frequent presence of blood admixture, the addition of an anticoagulant such as heparin (100 units per 10 ml) or EDTA (10 mg per 10 ml fluid) is recommended to prevent coagulation.
For cytological smear preparations such as gynecological smears or thyroid punctate smears, please send the slides completely dried. Furthermore, they should only be labeled in pencil; stickers on slides hinder cytological processing.
All preparations must be clearly labeled on the sample container and the request for pathological assessment.
The duration of the examination depends heavily on the type of sample and the type and scope of the necessary examinations. The average processing time for basic routine histology examinations is 4 days. The processing time for non-gynecological cytology is 2 days. The examinations are invoiced according to GoÄ or EBM.
If you have any praise, suggestions or criticism, please contact the central feedback and complaints management of the MHH(https://www.mhh.de/beschwerdemanagement) or send an email directly to pathologie@mh-hannover.de. Your request will be processed transparently and conscientiously. It will be processed without any form of discrimination and in a spirit of impartiality.
Note for consultative second opinions and reference pathology for studies
Kerosene blocks are preferred for consultative second opinions by the Institute. If this is not possible, representative external self-staining is sufficient, if possible with additional unstained blank sections. For reference pathology in the context of studies, the material requirements specified by the study management apply. For material primarily sent to us, we reserve the option of obtaining a second opinion from a consultant pathologist ourselves, whereby the choice of second opinion pathology is usually made by the Institute.
The list of consultant pathologists can be made available on request.

dotSlide is an imaging system for "virtual microscopy",
the digital counterpart to conventional light microscopy.
Samples are no longer viewed directly through the eyepiece on the microscope,
but are displayed as a virtual overall image that is displayed on the monitor in the desired resolution after scanning the complete sample
.
The images were taken with the DSL-SYS-dotSlide system (microscope BX51),
of the company Olympus in the MH -Hannover (Pathology), under the direction of PD Dr. Dr. Christgen.

As a new service, the ZIMt offers a solution for encrypted data transmission with the Cryptshare software.
This solution is to be used by all MHH employees for the exchange of personal data and also data requiring special protection with external bodies.
The password required to decrypt the e-mail attachment must be transmitted by a means other than e-mail (telephone, fax) for data protection reasons.
Please instruct external parties to also send you the relevant data in this way.
Communications between the two parties take place via e-mail, whereby one party must have an MHH e-mail address.
The data is not sent directly as an attachment, but the encrypted data can be downloaded from the MHH cryptshare server via a link. The maximum volume per transfer is currently 512 MB.
This file upload can help you to store larger files of up to 400 MB
on the server and make them available to other people outside the pathology department.
You can upload files up to 400 MB here.
After uploading, you will be shown the link to the file.
You must copy this link!
Please note that not all file types can be uploaded here!
If you do not know the password,
please ask for it at the following e-mail address : wildgrube.thomas@mh-hannover.de
