This atlas is based on specimens used in the microscopic anatomy course at the Anatomical Institute of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. It was created by us during our work at the Anatomical Institute of the LMU with the intention of helping the course participants to recognize the structures presented in the course, to name them correctly and to recapitulate them in preparation for the examinations.
Various letters from students and colleagues from other universities have shown us that the atlas is a welcome aid for students and lecturers due to the quality of the Munich preparations, regardless of the preparations and stains used in the histology and microscopic anatomy course at the various faculties. In addition, it has proven to be of general value for those interested in histology and anatomy. For this reason, we are once again making it freely available online. It goes without saying that the study of the illustrations does not replace active microscopy or the study of the corresponding textbooks, nor does the atlas claim to be complete with regard to the selection of possible preparations and stains.
The specimens were digitized using a video camera (Sony) adapted to a microscope (Axiophot, Zeiss) or a DMC 2 digital camera (Polaroid) and processed with Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw and Powerpoint.
We would like to thank everyone whose constructive criticism helped us to create this material.
